The Costs

Is the cost of marriage counseling a bargain?

Do a cost analysis, and you will discover that the money you spend on getting professional advice from a trusted counselor is literally invaluable. What do I mean by a cost analysis? Let's illustrate. The typical counselor will charge $150 an hour; many will charge more, and my mentor charges $300 an hour. My rate is $150/hour, but my sessions are 90 minutes long, and for those I charge $200. It's a bargain. Here's why. Let's say our counseling relationship takes 10, 90-minute sessions for a total of 2,000 dollars. In the end, husband and wife are not just together, but falling back in love like they were when they first got married. That could be you. Couple B, on the other hand, decides the costs are too much, so they pursue getting a divorce or living with their unhappiness a while longer, which will still lead to a divorce. Now the couple, who were strapped already, find themselves paying for two residences, many meals out, and daycare expenses that were often covered by the other spouse. Now we are talking in terms of tens of thousands, not a few thousand. And those are only the extra financial costs. What about the price of separation, loneliness, and estrangement within the family if there are children? Those costs cannot be measured, as you know. Just ask any couple who have gone through this painful process.

Divorce may seem an easy out at first, especially to get away from the pain in a couple's current situation. But what if that pain can go away? What if the marriage can be mostly pain-free? What if the happiness and joy can be restored? You get the idea. Now the money spent on counseling becomes an investment, not a waste of resources.
