My name is Darryl Knappen and I have been professionally trained as a pastor at Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in Portland OR, earning my Master’s of Divinity in 1977. I was ordained by First Baptist Church of Gladstone OR, receiving the title of Reverend. That process required 10 years of formal and practical training before earning the title of Rev. I have served five churches in five states from coast to coast and served most recently as Senior Pastor of Cornerstone Church in Alexandria MN. My tenure there lasted 30 plus years from 1994 to 2025. In the span of 50 years of pastoral ministry I averaged, conservatively, two weddings per year and two marital counseling relationships per year totally over 100 weddings and over 100 counseling relationships. The pre-marital counseling sessions alone would have totaled over 1,200 hours of counseling. The marriage counseling totals would be even more.
I am a marriage and relationship coach, not a licensed marriage and family counselor. That means that I am not (nor want to be) licensed by the state. My services are educational and goal-oriented. They do not substitute for medical or psychological treatment. The boundaries I must maintain as a coach are limited to the above descriptions. If it is discovered in our sessions that there is active domestic abuse, severe and untreated mental illness, or unmanageable trauma, I will immediately refer the client to a licensed clinical therapist.
As a coach and in our coaching sessions there is a need for confidentiality. It is my guarantee and oath to the client that the content of our
sessions will not be shared with anyone outside the coaching relationship. An exception to that will be in cases where child abuse is be revealed. As a former mandated reporter I was required to report such abuse to the civil authorities and even now as a coach I will still do the same. The other exception will be to seek assistance from a mentor coach that will also be bound by the same oath of confidentiality and who will not know the client personally.
In our coaching relationship it is important that the client understand there are no secrets to be kept in confidence from a spouse. If, for example a spouse admits to an ongoing affair (or even a previous unconfessed adulterous affair) and requests that information not be shared with
the spouse, our coaching relationship will terminate. The same is true for unconfessed illegal drug and alcohol addiction and pornography addiction.
Currently my costs are $200 per ninety minute session with payment due following the session. There is no way for a coach to know in advance how many sessions are required to bring about the goals the client seeks to accomplish in our coaching relationship.
As a marriage and relationship coach my primary source for advice will come from God’s Word the Holy Bible. Clients will be reminded of the biblical admonition from Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you
may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”. (ESV) The coaching process will focus almost entirely on the concept of being transformed by the renewal of the mind. The approach will be dyadic, meaning the clients will be the ones to make the changes needed. As a coach, I will provide the tools and the suggestions, but it will be up to the clients themselves to apply and practice the methods at home on their own.
